Privacy policy

Helpy is built so that your bookmarks stay yours. This page explains, in plain language, exactly what happens to your data in the Helpy Chrome extension and on this website.

The short version

  • Helpy has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. We never receive your bookmarks, pages or keys.
  • When you ask Helpy to do something, it sends only what that task needs directly from your browser to the AI provider you chose, using your own API key.
  • With Chrome's built-in AI or a local model, and for AI search, nothing leaves your computer.
  • Everything Helpy stores stays in your browser, and you can delete it at any time.

Who we are

Helpy is developed by Javier Peres, Berlin, Germany ("we", "I"), who is the controller for the data described here. Full contact details are in the legal notice. For questions about this policy or your data, email info@peresramirez.com or use the feedback page and leave an email address so I can reply.

Data stored on your device

Helpy keeps the following in your browser's extension storage on your computer. It is never sent to us.

  • Settings: your chosen AI provider and model, folder-depth choice, theme and AI search settings.
  • API keys you enter, and the address of a local or custom AI server if you set one. Keys are stored in Chrome's local extension storage and only sent to the provider they belong to.
  • Ask conversations: your current chat, including the text of the page it is about (up to about 40,000 characters), so it is still there when you reopen Helpy. "New chat" deletes it.
  • Work in progress: the latest "Organize this page" suggestions (kept for up to one hour) and the state of a bulk-organize run, so they survive closing the popup.
  • Cached model lists from your AI provider (names of available models), refreshed daily.
  • AI search files: the on-device search model and the search index built from your bookmark titles and addresses (see AI search).

Your bookmarks themselves are read and changed through Chrome's bookmarks feature and stay in Chrome. Helpy only moves or creates bookmarks and folders when you confirm it (Save here, or Apply after reviewing a bulk-organize plan), or when you import a file.

Data sent to the AI provider you choose

Helpy works with AI services you pick and connect yourself. When you use a feature, Helpy sends a request directly from your browser to that provider, authenticated with your API key. Nothing goes through us. Only the data needed for that task is sent:

When you…Helpy sends
Organize this pageThe page's title, address (URL), meta description and main heading, and the names of your bookmark folders (your folder structure).
Bulk organizeThe title, address and current folder of each bookmark you selected, and the names of your bookmark folders.
Ask about a pageThe page's title, address, description and visible text (up to about 40,000 characters, less for on-device AI), any text you selected on the page, your question and the recent messages of the conversation.
Set up a provider or refresh modelsYour API key, to list the models available to you.

How the provider handles that data is governed by its own terms and privacy policy, which you accepted when you created your key: Google Gemini API, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter (and the providers OpenRouter routes to). Some free tiers, for example, may use your requests to improve their models; check your provider's settings if that matters to you.

On-device options: with Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano), requests are processed by Chrome on your computer. With a local server such as Ollama or LM Studio, requests go only to the address you entered, normally your own computer. In both cases nothing is sent to an online AI service by Helpy.

AI search runs entirely on your device. The first time you turn it on, Helpy asks before downloading a small open-source model (about 23 MB or 118 MB) once from Hugging Face. That download is an ordinary file request: Hugging Face sees your IP address, as any website would, but no bookmark data is sent. The model and the index it builds from your bookmark titles and addresses are stored in your browser. Searches never leave your computer.

Why Helpy asks for each permission

  • Bookmarks: to read your folders and bookmarks, and to create, move and import them when you confirm.
  • Active tab and scripting: to read the title, description, heading and text of the page you're on, only when you open Helpy on that page. Chrome's own pages and the Chrome Web Store are never read.
  • Storage: to keep your settings, keys and the items listed above on your device.
  • Alarms: to keep long tasks, like bulk organize, running in the background after you close the popup.
  • Favicon: to show the small site icons next to bookmarks, from Chrome's own icon cache.
  • Access to AI provider sites (Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter): to send the requests described above.
  • Optional access to other sites: only requested, with your approval, for the address of a local or custom AI server you enter.

What we never do

  • We don't collect, receive, store or sell your data. There is no Helpy server.
  • No analytics, telemetry, advertising, tracking pixels or fingerprinting.
  • No browsing history is read. Helpy only looks at the current page when you open it.
  • No data is used for advertising, credit or lending decisions, or anything other than the feature you asked for.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

Helpy's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide Helpy's single purpose, organizing, searching and understanding your bookmarks and pages. It is transferred only to the AI provider you choose, at your request, to perform that purpose. It is not sold, not used for advertising, and not read by humans at Helpy.

Keeping and deleting your data

  • API keys: Settings → your provider → Remove key.
  • Chat: press "New chat" in the Ask tab.
  • AI search model and index: Settings → AI search → remove the model.
  • Everything at once: uninstall Helpy. Chrome deletes all of Helpy's stored data. Your bookmarks stay in Chrome.

Data you sent to an AI provider is kept according to that provider's policy, not ours.
